A superb guide

The clearest explanation of science fiction & fantasy I have come across.

This is the third book I have read on science fiction & fantasy this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. An easy five stars from me. I look forward to whatever the author writes next.

Recommended, with a caveat

Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. A good addition to a technical library, as long as you know what you are buying.

A useful guide

Good book. The writing is direct and the author is honest about limits.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. Solid, and I would buy another book from this author without hesitation.

A NOTE FOR YOUR NEXT CHAPTER

Make the pause easy to repeat.

Put your book somewhere you naturally stop: beside a chair or in your bag. Set aside a few minutes, read without a finishing target, and mark the next starting point. The habit matters more than the page count.
